The Human Spirit - 2009/06/16 04:58 Dear Friends,

June is traditionally the month of marriage. Named for Juno, the Roman God of Marriage, June is a time for vows, a time of commitment, a time to celebrate. In this tradition, we have chosen June as the month to celebrate the Human Spirit. What else drives us to succeed? What else inspires us to give? What, but this unseen element of the soul could produce the tragedies and comedies of the likes of Shakespeare and Hemingway, produce war and inspire peace, and explore the endless galaxies as if they are our back yard?

As we present you with June’s content, stories of the human spirit, we ask that you take a look at you own spirit. What drives it? What inspires it? What holds it back? And to share your own stories in our blogs and forums and, most importantly, to take the time to refuel that spirit, revive and push it to new limits. Renew the vows you have taken with your work, your art, your fellow human being and, most importantly, with yourself. Because it is out of this push and the unique potential, the awesome beauty of our drive as human beings that mountains are moved, oceans filled, nations built and broken only to be built again.

John F. Kennedy said, “I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit.” May it someday be the truth.

Best Wishes,

Michael Harrington
